Every GhostVPS server is a real virtual machine with its own public IPv4 address and its own IPv6 — not shared with another customer, not sitting behind NAT, and not sold as an add-on. That's the short answer. The longer and more useful answer is that "dedicated IP" is one of the most oversold phrases in hosting, and a lot of people buy one expecting privacy they don't get. This guide covers what a dedicated IP actually buys you, what it doesn't, and the two limits we don't currently support — stated up front rather than discovered after you've paid.

Dedicated vs shared vs NAT — the difference that matters
When a host advertises a very low monthly price, the first thing to check is what kind of address you're getting. There are three common arrangements, and only one of them is a normal server.

Rule of thumb: if the listing doesn't say "dedicated IPv4" explicitly, and the price is far below the market, assume NAT until proven otherwise. A dedicated IPv4 costs the provider real money — addresses are a scarce, traded resource — so nobody gives one away by accident.
What a dedicated IP is actually good for
Most of the value is boring infrastructure value, not privacy value:
- Standard ports. You control 1–65535. That's what makes a WireGuard endpoint, a game server, a database, or an SSH tunnel possible at all.
- Your own TLS. Point a domain's A record at your address, run Let's Encrypt, done — see the nginx + free SSL walkthrough. On a shared IP you're at the mercy of someone else's proxy.
- Reputation you own. Nobody else can get your address blacklisted. On shared infrastructure a single spammer next door can break your outbound connectivity for weeks.
- Allowlisting. If an API, a database, or a corporate firewall needs to allow a fixed source address, you need one address that stays yours.
- Predictable inbound. Webhooks, monitoring probes and clients can reach you at a fixed place without port-forwarding gymnastics.
What it is not: dedicated ≠ private
This is the part people get wrong, and it's worth being blunt about. "Dedicated" describes exclusivity, not secrecy. Your address is public by definition — that's the entire point of it.
✓ What dedicated does mean
- The address is yours alone while the server exists
- No other customer's traffic or reputation attaches to it
- Inbound services do not depend on another tenant's port map
- It doesn't change while the server runs
✕ What it does not mean
- Hidden — it's scannable by anyone, all day
- Unlocatable — it geolocates to the datacenter
- Clean history — addresses get recycled between tenants
- Anonymous — it identifies your server, and everything the server does is attributable to it
If your goal is privacy rather than connectivity, the address is the wrong lever. Anonymity here comes from the account and payment layer — a token-based account with no KYC and no email signup, funded with Monero — plus what you run on top, such as a Tor hidden service, which lets people reach the machine without ever learning its IP. One more thing worth knowing: IPv4 addresses are recycled. Yours was almost certainly used by someone else before you. If it lands on a blocklist for something a previous tenant did, destroying and redeploying the server is the usual fix — it costs you cents at hourly billing.
Two limits we don't support
We'd rather you read this now than find out after topping up.
- No reserved / floating IPs. The address is stable for the life of the server — reboots and power cycles keep it — but it isn't portable. Destroy the server and the address goes back to the pool; a new deploy gets a new one. If your design needs an address that survives rebuilds, GhostVPS isn't the right fit today.
- No reverse DNS (PTR) editing. The panel doesn't expose it. For almost everything this is irrelevant, but it matters for one case in particular.
That case is email. Treat outbound SMTP as unavailable: cloud providers routinely restrict port 25 on new capacity to limit spam, and without a matching PTR record your mail would be rejected by most receivers regardless. The practical answer is the one most people land on anyway — send through a transactional email API over HTTPS from the server, and don't run your own MTA on cloud infrastructure. How to get one, paying in crypto
